Pokémon Scarlet & Violet: Master Trainer's Guide to Obedience

Understanding Pokemon Obedience in Scarlet & Violet: A Comprehensive Guide
Pokemon obedience has evolved throughout the series, and Pokemon Scarlet & Violet introduces some key changes. This guide clarifies how obedience works in Gen 9, the impact of Gym Badges, and the role of the Original Trainer (OT).
How Obedience Works in Gen 9
Unlike previous generations, a Pokemon's obedience in Scarlet & Violet is primarily determined by its level at the time of capture. Pokemon caught at level 20 or below will automatically obey your commands. Catching a Pokemon above level 20 will result in disobedience until you earn your first Gym Badge. Crucially, a Pokemon caught within the obedience range will remain obedient even if it levels up beyond that initial threshold.
For instance, a level 20 Fletchinder caught with zero badges will obey commands even after leveling up to 21. However, a level 21 Fletchinder caught with zero badges will be disobedient until a badge is earned.
Disobedient Pokemon will refuse commands during auto-battles (indicated by a blue speech bubble) and may refuse moves or even inflict self-harm in standard battles.
Obedience Level and Badge Requirements
Gym Badges directly influence obedience levels. You can check your current obedience level on your Trainer Card (access via the map (Y-button) and Profile (X-button)). Each badge increases the level at which Pokemon will obey by 5.
The obedience levels per badge are:
Badge No. | Obedience Level |
---|---|
1 | Level 25 or lower |
2 | Level 30 or lower |
3 | Level 35 or lower |
4 | Level 40 or lower |
5 | Level 45 or lower |
6 | Level 50 or lower |
7 | Level 55 or lower |
8 | All levels |
Note: The obedience level is tied to the number of badges, not the specific Gym Leader defeated.
Transferred or Traded Pokemon Obedience
In Scarlet & Violet, the Original Trainer (OT) no longer affects obedience. The Pokemon's level at the time of transfer or trade determines its obedience. A level 17 Pokemon traded to you will obey even if leveled beyond 20, while a level 21 Pokemon will not obey until you obtain the appropriate number of badges. The "met level" is the level at the time of acquisition, regardless of the OT.
