Play Games in Portrait Mode with New Tate Mode Mini Controller!
If you're a gamer, you've likely experienced the frustration of playing vertical arcade games on your phone in an uncomfortable way. Enter Max Kern, a modder who's crafted a unique solution: the Tate Mode mini controller, specifically designed to tackle this issue. But does it truly resolve the problem?
Traditional controllers are optimized for landscape mode, similar to what you'd find on a Switch or Steam Deck. Yet, many classic vertical shooters and retro games require you to hold your phone in portrait mode, much like scrolling through Instagram.
Max Kern's innovative approach led him to develop a compact USB-C gamepad tailored for portrait-mode, or Tate mode, gaming. This nifty gadget plugs directly into your phone's USB-C port, eliminating the need for Bluetooth, charging, or additional batteries.
Constructed with a Raspberry Pi RP2040 chip, Max 3D-printed the case and buttons via JLCPCB. If you're interested in making your own, Max has shared a detailed tutorial on his YouTube channel.

What’s Your Opinion on This Tate Mode Mini Controller?
The Tate Mode mini controller utilizes the GP2040-CE firmware, functioning as a standard HID controller, which makes it compatible with Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac. Its versatility is impressive for such a small device.
However, there's a potential downside. The setup might strain the USB-C port, as the gamepad supports part of the phone's weight. This means you'll need to hold both the phone and the controller to prevent any risk of bending the connector over time.
Feedback on Reddit ranges from admiration to concerns about hand cramps. While some users find it potentially uncomfortable, others are more open to the concept.
It's important to note that this isn't a commercial product but a DIY project. Max has generously shared all necessary firmware and print files on Thingiverse and Github. What's your take on this innovative little gamepad? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
