11 Bit Studios, the acclaimed Polish developer, has unveiled a new trailer for their eagerly awaited sci-fi adventure, The Alters, which is inching closer to its 2025 release. Amidst the excitement, the studio paused to reminisce about their landmark game, This War of Mine, which catapulted them to international acclaim over a decade ago.

While This War of Mine is renowned for its somber and often despairing ambiance, The Alters takes a different route, embracing a more vibrant and occasionally humorous narrative. This new title focuses on the challenges faced by alternate versions of the protagonist, Jan Dolski. Despite the contrasting tones, the developers highlight a deep thematic link between the two games.

Both This War of Mine and The Alters center on the theme of survival, albeit in different contexts. In This War of Mine, players are thrust into the grim realities of a war-torn city, managing resources and facing daily trials to keep a group of civilians alive. Conversely, The Alters frames survival as a time-sensitive mission, where players must continually relocate their mobile base to escape the destructive reach of a relentless sun that reduces everything to dust.

These games challenge players to step beyond their comfort zones, venturing into dangerous territories in search of vital resources. The primary distinction between them is the nature of their protagonists: This War of Mine features a diverse group of civilians, while The Alters introduces a unique ensemble of Jan Dolski's alternate selves.
