"New Aladdin Adaptation Turns Horror"
We're entering a new era of adaptations, and the next one to watch is a fresh take on the classic Middle Eastern folktale, Aladdin. Titled "Aladdin: The Monkey's Paw," production is set to kick off next month, but don't expect a retelling akin to the beloved 1992 Disney version. This adaptation promises a darker, supernatural twist on the original legend, starring Nick Sagar, Ricky Norwood, Montana Manning, and Bradley Stryker, who will also helm the project as director and producer, working from a script penned by Charley McDougall. Filming will occur in the UK, where the story is also set.
According to Deadline, the plot of "Aladdin: The Monkey's Paw" revolves around a modern-day Londoner named Aladdin who inherits an ancient monkey's paw rumored to grant wishes. However, he soon discovers that every wish comes with a devastating cost. As those around him suffer from the curse, Aladdin must face an escalating evil and the demonic force that thrives on each wish made.
This darker take on the story seems deeply personal to the film's creators. In a statement to the outlet, the writer expressed, "We always wanted to explore horror through a personal lens — not just the scares, but the human cost of wishes. This story's been haunting us for a while, and it's time to let it loose. The best horror films haunt you long after the credits roll. That's what this story does. It's sharp, emotional, and full of dread in all the right ways. We're not just making another horror film — we're building a world around a truly iconic concept. The paw, the mythology, the characters — it's all there."
While Disney's 1992 animated adaptation remains one of the most cherished versions of the folktale, Aladdin has been adapted numerous times over the years in both animated and live-action formats, and in various languages. The most recent reimagining was the 2019 live-action remake, featuring Naomi Scott from "Smile 2," which sought to modernize the legend.
Although no release date has been announced for this horror-infused take on a classic, the intrigue surrounding "Aladdin: The Monkey's Paw" is palpable, and fans are eagerly awaiting its debut.
