ASUS Teases Xbox-Branded Handheld
Gaming hardware giant ASUS has recently teased what could be the much-anticipated Xbox-branded handheld device. The ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) X/Twitter account shared a tantalizing glimpse of its "little robot friend cooking something up," showcasing both an ROG Xbox controller and a new handheld system.
This comes on the heels of IGN's report last month about Microsoft's expansive video game hardware plans, which include a next-generation Xbox slated for 2027 and an Xbox-branded gaming handheld potentially launching later in 2025.
The teaser from ASUS clearly displays buttons labeled with the familiar Xbox layout (Y, B, A, and X), a D-pad, two thumbsticks, and four smaller additional buttons, though these are somewhat obscured. This configuration distinctly sets it apart from PlayStation's and Nintendo's layouts.
Adding to the excitement, the official Xbox account responded to the teaser with a playful wide-eyed gif, hinting at an impending reveal.

Although specific details like a release date remain under wraps, the monitor in the teaser hints at the handheld's key features: "Marathon stamina, more capacity, faster speeds" and a "fresh look!"
In January, Jason Ronald, Microsoft’s VP of ‘Next Generation,’ shared with The Verge that Microsoft aims to merge Xbox and Windows experiences for PC gaming handhelds developed by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) like ASUS, Lenovo, and Razer.
While the teased Xbox-branded handheld isn't a Microsoft-made console, rumors suggest Microsoft is gearing up to release its own first-party handheld years down the line. Additionally, the successor to the Xbox Series X is reportedly in full production and expected to launch in 2027, aligning with Xbox president Sarah Bond's statement about pushing forward with a significant technological leap in the next generation of hardware.
Amidst these developments, the future of gaming consoles is a hot topic. Netflix's President of Games, Alain Tascan, recently predicted a future where gaming consoles play a lesser role, despite ongoing efforts from major players like Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo. Nintendo's eagerly awaited Switch 2 is set to be revealed in a Nintendo Direct on April 2, with fans eagerly awaiting details on its features, release date, and pre-order information.
