Avowed: Choices Alter Game
Avowed, slated for a 2025 release, promises a deeply immersive RPG experience according to its game director, Carrie Patel. This sneak peek reveals a complex narrative with significant player agency and multiple branching storylines.
Avowed: A Deep Dive into Complex Gameplay and Multiple Endings
Navigating Political Intrigue in The Living Lands
In an interview with Game Developer, Patel highlighted Avowed's focus on player choice and its impact on the overall narrative. Every decision, she emphasizes, contributes to a unique and personalized playthrough. The game encourages players to reflect on their actions and motivations, prompting introspection on their engagement with the game world.
"It's about providing players with continuous opportunities to express themselves and explore their character's alignment," Patel explained. "The game encourages you to be mindful of your experience, considering when you feel excited, curious, or disengaged, and what keeps you invested moment to moment."
The choices players make in Avowed directly impact the political landscape of Eora, specifically within The Living Lands. The narrative unfolds based on discoveries made throughout the game. "The stories intertwine, creating a rich and interconnected experience," Patel added.
Players assume the role of an envoy from the Aedyran Empire, tasked with investigating a spiritual plague while simultaneously pursuing their political ambitions. "Meaningful roleplay stems from providing players with depth to explore," Patel noted. "It's about shaping your character and how the game's events allow you to express that identity."
Beyond the narrative depth, Avowed features strategic combat incorporating magic, swords, and firearms. "The diverse abilities and weapon combinations ensure a unique experience with each playthrough," Patel stated.
Confirming details to IGN, Patel revealed a multitude of endings, each arising from numerous combinations of player choices. "We have a double-digit number of ending slides, with many possible variations," she explained. "True to Obsidian's style, your ending is a direct reflection of your actions and discoveries throughout the game."
