Baldur’s Gate 3 experienced a notable player surge on Steam after launching its highly anticipated Patch 8, putting developer Larian Studios in a strong position to shift focus to its next major project.

The game-changing Patch 8 arrived last week, introducing 12 new subclasses alongside a fresh photo mode feature. This update reignited player engagement as fans rushed to explore these additions.

On Steam, Baldur’s Gate 3 reached an impressive peak of 169,267 concurrent players over the weekend—remarkable numbers for a single-player RPG in its second year. Console player counts remain undisclosed by Sony and Microsoft.

Larian's Swen Vincke noted on Twitter that Patch 8's success, combined with robust mod support, ensures Baldur’s Gate 3's longevity while allowing the team to concentrate on their ambitious next title.

"We're excited to focus on making our next project exceptional," Vincke added. "The challenge ahead is significant."

"Today feels rewarding—Patch 8 revitalized our playerbase through substantial development effort," Vincke shared. "With thriving mod support ensuring continued engagement, we can dedicate ourselves fully to creating something equally groundbreaking."

The developer surprised fans by announcing their departure from D&D IPs to work on an original project, later implementing a media blackout to concentrate on development.

Hasbro's Dan Ayoub revealed plans to continue the Baldur’s Gate franchise during GDC, stating multiple parties have expressed interest following Larian's exit.

"We're finalizing our roadmap and will share announcements shortly," Ayoub told IGN, remaining coy about whether these plans involve Baldur’s Gate 4 or crossover content.

While acknowledging demand for a sequel, Ayoub stressed Hasbro will proceed methodically: "We're approaching this carefully—exploring various directions before committing. Expect concrete updates soon without overpromising."
