Blade Trilogy Writer on MCU Reboot Delay: 'Why So Long?'
The writer behind the iconic Wesley Snipes Blade trilogy, David S. Goyer, has expressed his readiness to collaborate with Marvel chief Kevin Feige to rejuvenate the stalled Mahershala Ali-led MCU reboot of Blade. Despite the film being announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, it has faced numerous delays and is currently on an indefinite hiatus, leaving fans in the dark about its future.
Recent revelations have shed light on the project's troubled development. Rapper and artist Flying Lotus, who was set to compose the film's music, confirmed on X / Twitter that the project had collapsed. "I guess we are so far from it even being a possibility now but. Yeah I was signed on to write music for the new BLADE movie before it fell thru," he stated, expressing doubt about its revival. Just days prior, costume designer Ruth E. Carter revealed on The John Campea Show that she was tasked with designing costumes for a 1920s-set Blade, hinting at a unique aesthetic direction that never came to fruition.
Actor Delroy Lindo, who was initially cast alongside Ali, shared his disappointment with Entertainment Weekly, noting that the project seemed promising at first but ultimately "went off the rails." Goyer, who penned all three original Blade films and directed Blade: Trinity, expressed his confusion and eagerness to contribute to the reboot, stating, "I would... I’ve always loved the character and I love him. I’ve been sitting on the sidelines wondering, ‘What in the world is going on? Why is it taking so long?’"
Despite Blade being removed from Marvel’s release schedule seven months ago, Kevin Feige remains committed to bringing the character to the MCU. In an interview with Omelete in November 2024, Feige affirmed, "We are committed to Blade. We love the character, we love Mahershala's take on him... But I can tell you that the character will indeed make it to the MCU."
In the meantime, the MCU film Deadpool & Wolverine, which featured a cameo from Wesley Snipes reprising his role as Blade, has been a massive success, grossing $1.3 billion globally. Ryan Reynolds, who plays Deadpool, has advocated for Snipes' Blade to receive a send-off akin to Hugh Jackman's Logan, emphasizing Blade's pivotal role in paving the way for the superhero genre. "There is no Fox Marvel Universe or MCU without Blade first creating a market," Reynolds tweeted, calling Blade "Marvel Daddy" and urging fans to support a Logan-like farewell.
Reynolds is also reportedly in the early stages of developing a Deadpool and X-Men ensemble film, where Deadpool would share the spotlight with other X-Men characters, allowing them to be "used in unexpected ways."
