Blizzard Welcomes Marvel Rivals, Acknowledges Similar Gameplay

From the moment Marvel Rivals was unveiled, it drew immediate comparisons to Overwatch. At a glance, Marvel Rivals shares striking similarities with Blizzard's game. Both feature competitive multiplayer hero shooters, but while Overwatch boasts its unique cast, Marvel Rivals brings iconic Marvel heroes and villains into the fray. Both titles are free-to-play, operate on live service models, and rely on the introduction of new characters to keep the gameplay fresh and engaging.

Since its launch in December, Marvel Rivals has seen an explosive surge in popularity, which some speculate has come at the expense of Overwatch 2's player base. The narrative suggests that Blizzard's game is experiencing a decline as NetEase's Marvel Rivals attracts a significant number of players.

In a recent interview with GamesRadar, Overwatch 2 director Aaron Keller addressed this new competitive landscape. "We're obviously in a new competitive landscape that I think, for Overwatch, we've never really been in before, to this extent where there's another game that's so similar to the one that we've created," Keller remarked. Surprisingly, he viewed this situation as "exciting" and praised Marvel Rivals for taking ideas established by Overwatch in a "different direction."

Keller acknowledged that Marvel Rivals' success has prompted a shift in Blizzard's approach to Overwatch 2. "This is no longer about playing it safe," he stated. In response, Blizzard has unveiled ambitious plans for Overwatch 2 in 2025, which include not only expected new content but also significant changes to the core gameplay. These updates will introduce hero perks and bring back loot boxes, aiming to reignite interest in the game.

As Overwatch approaches its ninth year since its initial release in 2016, and with Overwatch 2 now over two years old, the pressure is on to see if these changes can spark a resurgence. Although Blizzard keeps Overwatch player numbers private, recent Steam data shows concurrent player numbers at their lowest since Overwatch 2's launch on the platform in 2023, with a peak of 37,046 players over the last 24 hours. In contrast, Marvel Rivals remains a top 10 most-played game on Steam, boasting a peak of 310,287 concurrent players in the same period.

Overwatch 2 continues to struggle with its 'mostly negative' user review rating on Steam. The game faced significant backlash in August 2023, becoming the worst user-reviewed game on Steam at the time. Much of the criticism centered around its monetization model, particularly after Blizzard's decision to update the premium original Overwatch into a free-to-play sequel in 2022, which left the original game unplayable. Overwatch 2 also faced controversies, including the cancellation of its highly anticipated PvE Hero mode, which many players felt was the primary justification for the sequel.
