Supercell's Squad Busters: A Solid Start, But Falling Short of Expectations

Supercell's latest mobile game, Squad Busters, a MOBA RTS hybrid, has achieved 40 million installs and $24 million in net revenue within its first month. This success is particularly strong in the US, followed by Indonesia, Brazil, Turkey, and South Korea.

However, despite these impressive figures, there are concerning trends. Spending has decreased since launch, with the $24 million significantly trailing Brawl Stars' $43 million and Clash Royale's staggering $115 million first-month revenues in 2018 and 2016, respectively. Even more alarming is the decline in installs, peaking at 30 million in the first week and dropping below 5 million by the end of the month.

Supercell Fatigue?

The diminishing returns for Squad Busters, a game Supercell clearly invested heavily in, raise questions. Competitor Honkai Star Rail, for instance, generated a massive $190 million in its first month, highlighting the disparity. While Squad Busters is a well-made game, its similarity to Supercell's existing titles might indicate player fatigue with the company's formula. Only time will tell if Squad Busters can overcome this challenge.
