Ed Boon Hints at T-1000 Fatality in Mortal Kombat 1, Teases Future DLC

Mortal Kombat 1's development chief, Ed Boon, has tantalized fans with a sneak peek at the T-1000 Terminator's Fatality on social media, while hinting at more "future DLC" for the game. Celebrating the launch of guest character Conan the Barbarian, Boon announced that Mortal Kombat 1 has surpassed five million sales, an increase from the previously reported four million. Accompanying this milestone, Boon shared a thrilling clip of the T-1000's Fatality, where the character drives a smashed truck into his opponent, echoing the iconic chase scene from Terminator 2.

Boon's comment about "keeping trucking forward with future DLC" has sparked speculation within the Mortal Kombat community about potential new characters beyond the current set. The T-1000 is the last DLC character slated for the Khaos Reigns expansion, joining the likes of Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian. This has led to discussions about the possibility of a third set of DLC characters or a Kombat Pack 3, especially in light of the game's strong sales performance.

Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of Mortal Kombat's developer NetherRealm, remains committed to the franchise. In November, CEO David Zaslav stated that the company plans to focus on just four key titles, with Mortal Kombat being one of them. Furthermore, in September, Boon affirmed that NetherRealm had chosen its next game three years earlier but vowed to support Mortal Kombat 1 "for a long time to come."

While fans speculate about a potential third Injustice game, as NetherRealm has alternated between Mortal Kombat and Injustice titles in the past, neither the studio nor Warner Bros. has confirmed any plans for the DC fighting game franchise. The first Injustice game, "Injustice: Gods Among Us," was released in 2013, followed by "Injustice 2" in 2017. After releasing "Mortal Kombat 11" in 2019, NetherRealm opted for a soft reboot with Mortal Kombat 1 in 2023 instead of returning to Injustice.

In a June 2023 interview with IGN, Boon touched on the decision to release another Mortal Kombat game, citing factors like the COVID-19 pandemic and the switch to a newer version of the Unreal game engine (from Unreal Engine 3 for Mortal Kombat 11 to Unreal Engine 4 for Mortal Kombat 1). Despite this, Boon reassured fans that the door is "not at all" closed on the Injustice franchise.
