HBO is reportedly in advanced negotiations with acclaimed actor John Lithgow, known for his role as Lord Farquaad in Shrek, to portray the iconic Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore in their upcoming Harry Potter series.

While Variety reports Lithgow is nearing a deal, HBO remains tight-lipped, refusing to confirm the casting. This follows November reports naming Mark Rylance as the frontrunner for the Dumbledore role.

"We understand the significant interest surrounding this project and the resulting speculation," an HBO spokesperson stated. "As pre-production continues, we will only confirm casting decisions once contracts are finalized."

Lithgow's extensive credits include The World According to Garp, Terms of Endearment, Footloose, Dexter, and The Crown, showcasing his versatility and range.

The series will prioritize British talent, mirroring the films. This is perhaps unsurprising given author J.K. Rowling's reported involvement in the casting process.

Announced in April 2023, the Harry Potter adaptation promises a faithful, in-depth telling of the novels, expanding upon the narrative limitations of the film series. The project will be helmed by Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod, producers of Succession, with Mylod also contributing writing experience from Game of Thrones.
