Chess Makes its Esports Debut at the 2025 Esports World Cup

The 2025 Esports World Cup (EWC), the world's premier gaming and esports festival, is set to feature a surprising new addition: chess! This ancient game joins the lineup thanks to a significant collaboration between Chess.com, Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, and the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF). This partnership aims to introduce this classic game to a wider, more mainstream audience.

EWCF CEO Ralf Reichert expressed his excitement, calling chess "the ultimate strategy game." He believes its rich history, global appeal, and vibrant competitive scene make it a perfect fit for the EWC's mission to unite global gaming communities.

World champion and top-ranked player Magnus Carlsen will serve as an ambassador, hoping to engage a new generation of chess players. Riyadh, Saudi Arabia Hosts the Historic Event

The EWC will be held in Riyadh from July 31st to August 3rd, 2025, with a $1.5 million prize pool attracting top chess players worldwide. Qualification will be through the 2025 Champions Chess Tour (CCT), held in February and May. The top 12 CCT players, along with four from a "Last Chance Qualifier," will compete for a $300,000 prize pool and a coveted spot in the EWC, marking chess's groundbreaking esports debut.

To enhance appeal to esports fans, the 2025 CCT will feature a new match format. Instead of the traditional 90-minute time control, games will use a 10-minute clock with no increment. Tiebreakers will utilize a single Armageddon game.
