Chris Evans Says He Isn't Returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Another Avengers
Chris Evans Denies Return to Marvel Cinematic Universe Despite Reports
Despite recent reports, Chris Evans has definitively stated that he will not be reprising his role as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday or any other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film. Evans directly refuted a Deadline report claiming his return alongside Robert Downey Jr., calling it "not true" in an interview with Esquire.
This contradicts information shared by Anthony Mackie, the current Captain America, who previously stated his manager informed him of Evans' return. However, Mackie subsequently spoke with Evans, who confirmed his retirement from the MCU. "I talked to Chris a few weeks ago and it wasn’t on the table then," Mackie explained. Evans himself reiterated his retirement, stating, "Happily retired." He noted that such rumors resurface periodically since Avengers: Endgame.
While Evans has returned to the superhero genre in a cameo as Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine, this was a significantly smaller role than his central Captain America arc.
The MCU's future remains somewhat uncertain following the removal of Jonathan Majors from the franchise due to assault and harassment charges. Majors was set to play Kang, the intended successor to Thanos as the primary antagonist, but his departure has reportedly caused significant disruption.
Marvel Studios has since announced Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., as the new main villain. This announcement fueled speculation about the return of other original Avengers, although no further confirmations have been made.
Benedict Cumberbatch confirmed Doctor Strange's absence from Avengers: Doomsday, but his involvement in the sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, is confirmed. The Russo Brothers are directing Avengers: Doomsday, which is expected to continue the multiverse storyline, with Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter also rumored to appear.
