"David Fincher and Brad Pitt's 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' Sequel Set for Netflix"
David Fincher and Brad Pitt are reportedly joining forces once again to bring to life a sequel to Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. According to The Playlist, this unexpected project will land on Netflix, further cementing Fincher's relationship with the streaming service. The film, which remains untitled at this stage, will see Pitt reprising his role as the stunt double, Cliff Booth.
The screenplay for this sequel originated from a project Tarantino had previously considered for his final film, known as The Movie Critic. Despite shelving The Movie Critic last year, Tarantino decided to evolve the story into a sequel for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Fincher came into possession of the script through Pitt, who received Tarantino's blessing to share it with the director. Deadline has also confirmed that this sequel is in the works.
Netflix has reportedly acquired the screenplay for $20 million, with a planned budget of $200 million. The film is set to commence shooting in California in July. While no other casting has been confirmed, it's noted that Leonardo DiCaprio will not be returning as Rick Dalton. Both Fincher and Pitt are fully committed to this project, setting aside other endeavors to focus on this sequel.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, released in 2019, has been hailed as a standout in Tarantino's filmography. The sequel has high expectations to meet, given the original's conclusive ending. However, the world of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood has been further explored in Tarantino's 2021 novelization, which delves deeper into the 1960s California setting and sheds light on Cliff Booth's backstory, including the mystery surrounding his wife's death.
