DC's upcoming film adaptation of The Authority faces setbacks, according to DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn. Initially announced as a major project within Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, the film has been placed on the back burner due to several challenges.

Gunn cited the project's complexity and the need to differentiate it from similar properties like Amazon's The Boys as significant hurdles. The evolving overall narrative and the desire to integrate existing DC characters already in production further complicated development. He acknowledged that the film's progress is currently stalled.

"Honestly, Authority's been the one that's been the hardest, both because of the shifting overall story and because of getting it right in a world with The Boys and a world with all the things that The Authority influenced that came out after it," Gunn stated.

Despite the delay, one Authority member, The Engineer/Angela Spica, is slated to appear in the upcoming Superman film. The Engineer's considerable powers – self-duplication, technopathy, genius-level intellect, and radio-induced telepathy – make her a formidable character.

Other Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters projects have also experienced delays. Waller, a spin-off of Peacemaker, encountered setbacks, while Booster Gold is progressing well. Paradise Lost remains a priority and is actively in development, with the pilot script currently being written. The Swamp Thing film is on hold, pending the availability of director James Mangold, but its postponement isn't considered detrimental to the overall DCU storyline.
