Deadlock Changes from Four Lanes to Three in New Major Update
Deadlock's Massive Overhaul: From Four Lanes to Three
Deadlock has unveiled its most significant update in months, a complete restructuring of its map from four lanes to three. This article delves into the upcoming changes and the reasons behind this major shift.
A Three-Lane Revolution
The core gameplay of Deadlock is being reshaped with the reduction from four lanes to three. This simplification, announced on Steam on February 26, 2025, is accompanied by extensive map-wide revisions. Valve's announcement details sweeping changes impacting visuals, building layouts, pathways, neutral camps, air vents, destructible objects, power-up buffs, strategic maneuvering points, the mid-boss encounter, and more. While Deadlock's unique third-person perspective sets it apart in the MOBA genre, the previous four-lane design presented complexities.
Further refinements include streamlined farming mechanics. Players no longer need precise last-hits to summon Soul Orbs, accelerating early-game progression. The update also promises improvements to netcode and client performance.
A Vital Injection for Deadlock
This substantial update aims to revitalize Deadlock's player base. After reaching an all-time high of 171,490 concurrent players in September 2024, the game experienced a dramatic 90% decline, with only around 17,000 players active last month.
Valve Developer Yoshi, in a January 2025 Discord announcement, explained the shift in the update schedule. The previous bi-weekly release cycle proved too restrictive for implementing desired changes. Yoshi stated, "Going forward, major patches will no longer be on a fixed schedule. These patches will be larger than before, albeit a little bit more spaced out, and hotfixes will continue to be released as needed. We look forward to fleshing out the game in the new year."
Currently, Deadlock is undergoing active development and testing, accessible via friend invites only. An official release date remains unannounced. For further details, visit our Deadlock game page.
