Dr Disrespect's Studio, Midnight Society, Shuts Down, Cancels Game
Midnight Society, the game development studio co-founded by popular streamer Guy 'Dr. Disrespect' Beahm, has announced it will be closing its doors after three years of operation. The studio also confirmed the cancellation of its much-anticipated FPS game, Deadrop. In a post on X, Midnight Society shared the news, stating, "Today we are announcing Midnight Society will be closing its doors after three incredible years, with an amazing team of over 55 developers." The studio also reached out to the gaming community, asking if any other studios are hiring and could offer employment opportunities to its team members.
Founded by Beahm alongside industry veterans Robert Bowling and Quinn Delhyo, who have worked on titles like Call of Duty and Halo, Midnight Society aimed to leverage their extensive experience in the FPS genre. Deadrop was designed to be a free-to-play game, set in a fictional universe where "the 80s never ended." The studio's vision for the game included a unique aesthetic, with characters sporting Daft Punk-inspired helmets and using a mix of guns and swords. The gameplay was planned to be a PvPvE style extraction shooter, promising an engaging experience for players.
Deadrop was initially targeting a 2024 release but failed to meet this deadline. The studio's relationship with Beahm ended in 2024 after the streamer admitted to exchanging messages with a minor via Twitch's Whispers feature, which he acknowledged as sometimes being inappropriate. Despite this split, Midnight Society continued to work on Deadrop until deciding to shut down the project this year.
The closure of Midnight Society adds to the growing list of game studios facing closure or layoffs, reflecting the challenging times within the gaming industry. Companies like Ubisoft, BioWare, and Phoenix Labs have also been affected by similar issues, highlighting the broader struggles within the sector.
