RuneScape: Dragonwilds stunned fans with a surprise announcement during its early access livestream on April 16. Developer Jagex revealed that the game is now accessible for early access on Steam, a mere few weeks following its first trailer release.

The gaming community was taken aback, as the game had only recently been added to Steam's wishlist on April 1 and showcased its first official gameplay teaser on April 2. Although the game was first hinted at in 2022, it wasn't until late 2024 that Jagex began alpha testing signups for a "new survival game set in the RuneScape universe." The official reveal as RuneScape: Dragonwilds occurred on March 31, 2025.

Estimated Official Release Date in Early 2026

Jagex estimates that Dragonwilds will see its full release in early 2026. The development team emphasized their commitment to delivering a polished and engaging experience, stating, "We want to spend the time to get everything right to ensure that our players enjoy a complete, satisfying experience that they’ll want to revisit with friends again and again."

Jesse America, Jagex's Executive Producer, highlighted that Dragonwilds offers a fresh take on the RuneScape universe, tailored for its dedicated fanbase. He noted that the early access phase marks the beginning of their development journey, saying, "Throughout Early Access, we’ll be updating the game regularly with new content and features, while closely listening to the community to create an iconic open-world survival crafting game that will be cherished by both our most ardent RuneScape fans and newcomers alike."

Early Access Roadmap Revealed

Jagex also shared the game’s early access roadmap, detailing what players can look forward to during this period. A highlight of the upcoming updates is the new region, Fellhollow, a realm suspended between life and death.

Governed by the soul-eater dragon Imaru and influenced by the wild anima of Ashenfall and the cursed energy of the Underworld, Fellhollow promises an immersive experience. Players will be accompanied by the iconic RuneScape character Death, and can expect new quests, lore, gear, and music, along with new skills in magic, ranged, and farming.

Additionally, the game will introduce a new enemy type with Lesser Dragons, dragon slayer gear, a hardcore mode, a creative mode, and more. While specific release dates for these updates remain undisclosed, Jagex assured continuous improvements throughout the early access period.
