Funcom’s Servers Are Prepared

As the release date for Dune: Awakening approaches, Funcom is ensuring that they're ready for a potentially overwhelming launch in June. In a recent Steam post dated May 7, the developer addressed key questions from the first closed beta, particularly about server capacity and large-scale multiplayer mechanics.

At the outset, players will select a home server within a "World," which comprises at least 20 servers. This setup allows players to interact seamlessly with others within the same World.

However, concerns about server load and queues have been raised by fans. Funcom acknowledges the potential for heavy load at launch, with some servers reaching capacity. They've reassured players by stating that "thousands of servers will be grouped into hundreds of Worlds at launch."

Funcom elaborated, "A Hagga Basin server can handle 40 players at once, but daily fluctuations mean it can support several hundred choosing it as their home." The studio has rigorously tested these mechanics during the closed beta and implemented systems to limit character creation on overly popular servers, reducing the risk of them becoming full.

While Dune: Awakening emphasizes large-scale multiplayer, it remains enjoyable for solo players. At launch, however, single-player and private servers won't be available; these features will be added in post-launch updates.

What To Expect During The Large-Scale Beta Weekend

Ahead of the official launch, Funcom has outlined what players can expect from the upcoming large-scale beta weekend. In a post on the Dune: Awakening's official website dated May 8, they detailed the features of this event.

To participate in the beta weekend, fans can wishlist and request access on the game's Steam page, sign up on the official website, or obtain an access code at the Global LAN party on May 10.

The large-scale beta will run from May 9 to May 12. Here's a timetable for the event's streaming schedule in various regions:

During the beta, players will experience the first 20-25 hours of gameplay, covering early to mid-game content. Features include the CHOAM building set, the Hagga Basin South region, Eastern and Western Vermillius Gap Region, access to the Sandbike, early and mid-game combat, and parts of Act I of the story. Funcom has confirmed that progress made during the beta weekend will not carry over to the final game.
