Elder Scrolls Online Adds Subclasses After 11 Years of Fan Demand

The Elder Scrolls Online finally introduces a much-anticipated feature that fans have been requesting for years: subclasses. Dive into the details of this new addition and discover what's in store for the future of the game.
Elder Scrolls Online Direct Updates
Over 3000 Combinations of Skill Lines

As The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) celebrates its 10th Anniversary, Zenimax Online Studios has unveiled exciting updates during the ESO Direct 2025 event on April 10. One of the most anticipated announcements was the introduction of subclassing, a feature fans have been eagerly awaiting.
For years, players have expressed a desire for the ability to switch classes without starting over. With every new skill tree added, players had to begin anew to access the latest content, which was frustrating in an MMO setting. The developers have listened and are now introducing subclasses, enabling players to mix and match skill lines without the need to reroll their characters.

To unlock this feature, players must reach level 50. Once achieved, they can retain one skill line from their base class and swap out two others for any of the six available classes. This innovation opens up over 3000 combinations, allowing players to tailor their gameplay to their preferred style.
ESO Game Director Rich Lambert is enthusiastic about this new feature, stating that the team has conducted thorough testing. Despite potential increases in Power Levels, Lambert assures that the developers are "comfortable with where it stands."
Seasons of the Worm Cult

ZeniMax Online is also shifting towards seasonal content, a move that Studio Director Matt Firor believes will allow for more experimental content releases and better address player feedback.
Firor explained, "We want to keep telling great stories, but also introduce new ideas and gameplay systems. We'll do this on a different schedule that allows us to expand our focus and increase variety."

The next chapter, "Seasons of the Worm Cult," is a 10-year-in-the-making sequel to the game’s original Molag Bal storyline. It introduces the Isle of Solstice, a new zone where players will investigate the resurgence of the Worm Cult.
Producer Susan Kath clarified that while the "Seasons of the Worm Cult" will span most of the year, future seasons will typically last between 3 to 6 months. Zenimax also plans "remix" seasons, revisiting previous storylines, with a teased Dark Brotherhood-themed season on the horizon.
2025 Content Pass and Premium Edition
ESO announced on Twitter (X) on April 11 the launch of a new content pass and premium edition that will include all previous and upcoming releases. Here's what the pass includes:
● Fallen Banners dungeon pack - Now available
● Seasons of the Worm Cult Part 1 - June 2 for PC/Mac and June 18 for Xbox and PlayStation consoles
● The Writhing Wall in-game event - Q3/4 2025

● Seasons of the Worm Cult Part 2 - Q4 2025
Both editions also come with the following exclusive collectibles:
● Skulltooth Coastal Durzog mount
● Golden Eagle pet
● Remnant of Meridia's Light memento
Additionally, the 2025 Content Pass and Premium Edition will unlock a unique mount, pet, and memento upon the release of Seasons of the Cult Part 1 in June.

ESO is also offering Early Purchase rewards for a limited time, available until May 7, which include the Mages Guild Recall customized action. Other rewards include:
● 10-Year Lion Guard Steed mount
● 10-Year Anniversary Mudcrab pet
● Shell-Tide Beach emote pack
These rewards will be available until June 2 for PC and June 18 for Xbox and PlayStation consoles.

The Premium Edition provides access to all previously released Chapters and Classes, including:
● ALL previous ESO Chapters (Morrowind through to Gold Road)
● ALL previous Classes (base-game Classes and the Warden, Necromancer, and Arcanist)
With the year-long celebration of its 10th anniversary, ESO aims to expand its rich history and engage its supportive community. Plans to revisit previous storylines will round out unfinished narratives and further enrich the game's deep lore. The Elder Scrolls Online is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
