"Exclusive Nintendo Switch 2 Games Ease Price Shock, Says Former PlayStation Boss"

The former head of Sony Interactive Entertainment America, Shawn Layden, has shared his perspective on the consumer reaction to Nintendo’s Switch 2 pricing. He argues that the appeal of exclusive Nintendo titles like Mario, Zelda, and Donkey Kong helps offset any initial sticker shock.
Last week, Nintendo officially announced the Switch 2 at a price point of $449.99—roughly $50 higher than some industry predictions. Adding fuel to the fire, select Switch 2 games, including *Mario Kart World*, are now priced at $79.99, a $10 increase over standard game prices from the previous generation.
It's important to note that Nintendo is offering a limited-time bundle featuring the Switch 2 and *Mario Kart World* together for $499.99. This effectively reduces the cost of the game by $30. However, with uncertainty surrounding tariffs under Trump’s proposed policies and delays in U.S. pre-orders, it remains unclear how long this offer will remain available or whether the price could rise further.
But *Mario Kart World* isn't the only title hitting the $80 mark. Other Switch 2 Edition games, as revealed during the recent Nintendo Direct, include:
- Kirby and The Forgotten Land - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star Crossed World
- Super Mario Party Jamboree - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV
- The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
IGN has gathered insights into Nintendo’s decision to raise prices, including analysis and commentary from gaming industry veterans. Among them is Shawn Layden, who emphasized the unique value proposition Nintendo offers through its exclusive first-party content.
In a recent appearance on the PlayerDriven YouTube channel and podcast, Layden contrasted Nintendo’s strategy with those of Sony and Microsoft, both of which are expanding their titles across PC and rival platforms. Nintendo, however, continues to keep its biggest franchises exclusive to its own hardware.
"Wow, that’s kind of a hefty price hike from Switch 1 to Switch 2 and, wow, 80 bucks for a game?"
"But if it’s the only place where you can play Mario, then you get your wallet out and you buy into it... and Donkey Kong and Zelda. That first-party exclusivity kind of mitigates the sticker shock, if you will, of these price hikes because you want that content so bad."

Layden also touched on broader trends in video game pricing, suggesting that when adjusted for inflation, game prices have actually declined since the late '90s. He argued that console makers should have incrementally increased software prices by $5 per generation to reach around $90 today.
"In 2025 dollars, $59.99 in 1999 is equivalent to $100. Your purchasing power compared to your cost of living is much smaller now than before, but still companies have been reluctant to push that price up."
"Every generation they should have baked in a $5 software price hike, and make that the typical, 'well every generation it's another five bucks.' And you would have been up to $90 already by now."
IGN recently spoke with Bill Trinen, Vice President of Product and Player Experience at Nintendo of America, during a Switch 2 preview event in New York—before the delay announcement linked to tariff concerns.
Trinen defended the $80 price tag for *Mario Kart World*, pointing to the depth and breadth of the experience. He encouraged fans to watch the upcoming dedicated Nintendo Direct for more details.
"I would say it's less about the strategy of pricing Mario Kart World; it's more about what the experience, content, and value of the game are."
"This is a game that is so big and so vast, and you will find so many little things in it to discover. There are still secrets left that I think as people end up buying and playing the game, they're going to find this to be probably the richest Mario Kart experience they've ever had."
When asked about the $80 price point for other Switch 2 Edition titles, Trinen reiterated the same philosophy. While existing owners benefit from a $9.99 upgrade path and access via the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, newcomers don’t receive discounts.
"We just look at each individual game and we look at the content and the value of that game, and then we say, 'what is the right price for the value of this entertainment?'"
On the subject of the Switch 2’s current $449.99 MSRP, Trinen acknowledged rising development costs while emphasizing Nintendo’s commitment to fair pricing based on features and overall value.
"Obviously the cost of everything goes up over time, and I personally would love if the cost of things didn't go up over time."
"Any time you're building a new system with new tech, there are costs involved. So again, we look at what the experience is, what the new features are, and we try to find the right appropriate price for a product based on that."
As previously reported by IGN, some fans worry that additional price increases tied to Trump-era tariffs may further distance Nintendo from budget-conscious consumers already struggling with the current Switch 2 pricing model.
