Ex-PlayStation Director Criticizes Sony for Omitting Until Dawn Writers from Movie Credits

May 14,25(3 months ago)

A former PlayStation narrative director, Kim MacAskill, has initiated a petition urging the creators of the Until Dawn movie to appropriately credit the original game's writers. As reported by Eurogamer, MacAskill is pushing for Sony to set a new standard in the gaming industry by revising the credits for the Until Dawn movie. Her petition specifically calls for Sony to "revise their approach to IP crediting, particularly in transmedia adaptations," emphasizing the need to recognize the game developers who crafted the iconic game.

MacAskill expressed her frustration on the petition, highlighting that while the film credits the director and writers, the game developers are only acknowledged with a generic "based on the Sony game" statement. She emphasized the years of hard work by the developers, stating, "They spent years breaking their brains to make something incredible, and the world DESERVES to know their names... instead… No credit. No thanks. No honor."

In a detailed LinkedIn post, MacAskill compared the treatment of the Until Dawn movie credits to HBO's adaptation of Naughty Dog's The Last of Us, which credits both the studio and Neil Druckmann as writer and director. She pointed out the disparity in recognition, noting that Sony executives told her that her personally created IP would never be credited to her due to her salaried status. MacAskill challenged Sony, questioning the difference in treatment between her and others within the company.

MacAskill also revealed that her inquiries about the rights to the IP she created were met with a response from Sony that while they understood her position, they could not grant her the acknowledgment or ownership she sought. She reiterated her desire for credit and potential ownership for adaptation, calling for Sony to honor creators by providing an executive producer credit or equivalent acknowledgment.

The petition underscores the importance of recognizing creative voices in the industry, advocating for the integrity of game creators and inspiring future generations. MacAskill's call to action is not just for the Until Dawn team but for all game developers, urging Sony and the industry at large to ensure proper recognition in transmedia narratives.

In other news, it was recently reported that Until Dawn Remastered may be included in the PlayStation Plus games for May 2025, potentially as a promotional move for the newly released Until Dawn movie. However, the movie itself received a lukewarm reception, earning a 5/10 rating in IGN's Until Dawn movie review, which criticized it for failing to capture the essence of the original horror game and instead delivering a disjointed series of horror movie clichés.
