Fallout Developers Express Interest in a New Game, But Creative Freedom is Key

Several Fallout developers, including Fallout: New Vegas director Josh Sawyer, have voiced their enthusiasm for contributing to a new Fallout title. However, a crucial condition has been attached to their interest: the opportunity to explore fresh creative avenues.

The Need for Novelty

In a recent YouTube Q&A, Sawyer emphasized the importance of creative freedom. He stated his willingness to helm another Fallout game, but only if he's granted sufficient leeway to innovate: "Any project hinges on 'what are we doing, what are the boundaries, what am I allowed to do and not allowed to do?'" He further clarified that restrictive constraints would make the project unappealing, as the core motivation stems from exploring uncharted creative territories.

This sentiment is echoed by other developers. Last year, Fallout co-creators Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky expressed their eagerness to work on a Fallout: New Vegas remaster, but only if it allowed them to introduce novel elements. Cain highlighted the importance of innovation in his past RPG projects, stating that the allure of each project stemmed from the chance to explore uncharted creative territory. He emphasized that a new Fallout game would only pique his interest if it presented something genuinely new and different.

Obsidian's Perspective

Obsidian Entertainment CEO Feargus Urquhart also shared his desire to work on another Fallout game, given the opportunity. However, in a Game Pressure interview from January of last year, he confirmed that no such project was currently underway. He cited Obsidian's busy schedule with Avowed, Grounded, and Outer Worlds 2 as the primary reason. While he expressed hope for a future Fallout project before retirement, he acknowledged that its realization remains uncertain.
