Special Anniversary Website Goes Live

Square Enix has unveiled an official microsite commemorating Final Fantasy IX's silver anniversary. The portal confirms plans for "various anniversary projects including collaborative merchandise and special goods."

The site currently features exclusive FFIX collectibles like character figurines, plush toys, vinyl records, soundtrack CDs, and narrative art books. Additional announcements are promised throughout the anniversary celebration period.

Originally debuting on PlayStation consoles worldwide since July 7, 2000, FFIX has sold approximately 8.9 million units globally. The RPG received subsequent releases including a 2012 Japanese Ultimate Box edition, mobile remasters for iOS/Android in 2016, a PC version later that year, followed by PS4 (2017) and Switch/Xbox One/Windows 10 ports in 2019.

Speculation Surrounds Potential Remake and Dormant Anime Project

The anniversary launch has reignited discussions about a possible FFIX remake, especially following the commercial success of Final Fantasy VII's remake series. FFIX ranked fourth in NHK's 2019 nationwide poll of Japan's favorite Final Fantasy titles. While the anniversary site doesn't explicitly confirm remake plans, the game's enduring popularity positions it as a strong candidate.

Another mysterious project is the previously announced FFIX animated series. Revealed in 2021 as "Final Fantasy IX: The Black Mages' Legacy," this continuation would have explored the adventures of Vivi's descendants a decade after the main story. Paris-based Cyber Group Studios secured production rights before filing for bankruptcy protection in October 2024.

Multiple studios including United Smile and Newen Studios have expressed interest in acquiring Cyber Group's intellectual properties, potentially reviving the stalled anime production.
