Firaxis Games has unveiled a virtual reality edition of the recently launched Civilization VII.

Sid Meier's Civilization VII - VR marks the franchise's first venture into VR and will launch exclusively on Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets in Spring 2025.

Developed by PlaySide Studios (known for titles like The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners and Meta Horizon Worlds), the VR version offers a unique gameplay experience.

Civilization VII - VR brings the world of Civilization to life in unprecedented ways. The game world unfolds on a Command Table, allowing players to zoom in for intricate details or zoom out for a grand overview, much like a physical board game. Players interact directly with iconic world leaders, forging alliances or declaring war across the ages.

The game supports both immersive virtual reality and mixed reality modes, seamlessly switching between the two. VR players are immersed in a museum setting, overlooking a personalized vista based on their chosen leader. In mixed reality, the Command Table adapts to the player's physical space. A dedicated Archives room displays gameplay achievements as detailed dioramas, viewable in both VR and mixed reality. Online multiplayer allows up to four Meta Quest 3 and 3S players to compete for global domination.

The PC and console versions of Civilization VII, currently available to early access purchasers, have received mixed reception on Steam, with users citing UI issues, limited map variety, and missing features.

Firaxis has acknowledged this feedback, promising UI improvements, the addition of team-based multiplayer for cooperative play, and a greater diversity of map types, among other enhancements.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, in an interview with IGN, addressed the negative reviews but expressed confidence that the core Civilization fanbase will embrace the game with continued play, describing its early performance as "very encouraging."
