Initially, the company announced that the style would no longer be accessible, causing dissatisfaction among both new and existing players. This change drew criticism, especially since the Matte Black style was originally promised as obtainable through gameplay after purchasing the skin—a commitment made when it first launched in 2020.

While the return of the Master Chief skin in 2024 was celebrated, the decision to remove the Matte Black style sparked controversy. Players who had already purchased the skin expressed frustration, as they wouldn't be able to access the desired style despite prior assurances. In response, Epic Games reversed its decision, ensuring that the Matte Black style remains unlockable for all players.

This move comes amidst ongoing scrutiny over *Fortnite's* business practices, particularly regarding consumer complaints about "dark patterns." Recently, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) ordered Epic to issue refunds totaling $72 million to address such concerns. The reversal on the Matte Black style aligns with efforts to mend relationships with the player base, though other controversies surrounding skins like the Renegade Raider persist.

Despite the resolution, demands for additional styles, such as an original (OG) version for early adopters, continue to surface. However, it seems unlikely that Epic Games will introduce further changes beyond restoring the Matte Black style as promised.
