Frankenstein: A Brief Timeline of Guillermo del Toro’s 20-Years-in-the-Making Horror Movie

Feb 22,25(4 months ago)

Guillermo del Toro's lifelong fascination with Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is almost as legendary as the monster itself. A recent Netflix preview showcased the director's highly anticipated adaptation, revealing a first look at Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein.

While a trailer won't be released until summer, the preview included a still image of Isaac (shown above) and a brief description of the film's visual style from del Toro himself. He confessed in a video message, as reported by Variety, that the project has consumed him for decades: "This film has been on my mind since I was a child — for 50 years. I’ve been trying to make it for 20 to 25 years. In fact, some people may even think I am a little bit obsessed with Frankenstein." He underscored this by gesturing to his extensive collection of Frankenstein memorabilia in his Bleak House.

Del Toro offered a glimpse into the film's footage, depicting Isaac's Victor Frankenstein in a confrontation with Mia Goth, portraying a wealthy aristocrat, and Jacob Elordi as Frankenstein's monster. Del Toro described the monster as having "long black hair, stitched-up gray skin, and a glint of red in his eyes." Unfortunately, this footage remains unavailable online.

Del Toro emphasized the deeply personal nature of this adaptation: "You see, over the decades, the character has fused with my soul in a way that it has become an autobiography. It doesn’t get more personal than this.” His long-held ambition to bring this classic tale to the screen is undeniable, making Netflix's Frankenstein a project decades in the making.
