Shawn Levy, the director behind Deadpool & Wolverine, is reportedly on the verge of embarking on a journey to a galaxy far, far away, and he's bringing Ryan Gosling along for the ride. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Levy's Star Wars film is in negotiations with Gosling to take a leading role. Levy has been developing this project since 2022, with a script finalized last year. He's once again teaming up with Jonathan Tropper, the writer behind This Is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project, both Levy-directed films.

Naturally, details surrounding Levy's Star Wars movie are shrouded in secrecy. There's no information yet on Gosling's potential character or the film's place within the Star Wars timeline. What is known is that the story is unrelated to the Skywalker Saga. The Hollywood Reporter also indicates it's intended as a standalone film, rather than the start of a trilogy.

Gosling's potential involvement has apparently accelerated the film's progress. While Levy was initially slated to direct a boy band movie starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, THR suggests that if Gosling signs on, production on the Star Wars film will move ahead, becoming Levy's next project with a fall start date.

Star Wars is currently in a period of transition. Following the cancellation of The Acolyte, Disney+ recently concluded its latest series, Skeleton Crew. On the film front, Dave Filoni's The Mandalorian and Grogu movie wrapped production in December, aiming for a May 22, 2026 release. A new trilogy focusing on Daisy Ridley's Rey from the sequel trilogy is also in the works.
