The long-running GTA 6 mapping project has shifted into high gear following the release of Trailer 2, with one of its key members telling IGN, "it really changes everything for us for the rest of the year." The excitement within the GTA 6 Mapping Discord, which boasts 370 members and is on the brink of reaching 400, is palpable as they dive into the new details unveiled in Trailer 2.

"It's an information overload - it really changes everything for us for the rest of the year," Garza, who oversees the Discord server, shared with IGN. "We have so much new content to work on and we're really just getting started."

The GTA 6 Mapping Discord project began in the wake of the significant September 2022 leaks, which some believe Rockstar subtly acknowledged at the beginning of Trailer 2. The project's aim has been to compile the most accurate map of GTA 6, a task that was previously reliant on those leaks and the insights from December 2023's Trailer 1. However, the latest map version, released by project lead DuPz0r at the end of March, is now outdated, thanks to the wealth of new information from Trailer 2, which promises a more detailed and accurate map.

Alongside confirming plot details, characters, and sharing 70 new GTA 6 screenshots, Rockstar provided insights and images of the explorable areas in the state of Leonida, which mirrors Florida in GTA 6. Confirmed locations from this week's reveal include Vice City, the game's take on Miami, the tropical Leonida Keys archipelago, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga, a notable landmark near the state's northern border.

The volunteers are meticulously examining the trailer to pinpoint the precise locations of everything shown, striving to align images of the game's fictional spaces with their real-world inspirations to further refine GTA 6's map. Once complete, DuPz0r plans to release an updated map, which fans eagerly anticipate as their clearest preview of what GTA 6 will offer upon its release in May 2026.

Should Rockstar release more GTA 6 assets or gameplay footage before the game's launch, the volunteers will continue their efforts. Only upon the game's release will they be able to compare their fan-created map to the actual game and assess its accuracy.

However, the project faces the risk of being shut down by Take-Two, the parent company of Rockstar. In March, a modder who created a playable version of the GTA 6 map in GTA 5 was forced to stop following a takedown notice from Take-Two. This mod was based on the GTA 6 mapping project.

When asked last year about his concerns regarding potential action from Take-Two, Garza expressed "some mild concern." He noted, "This project has been going on for quite some time with no direct disruption to our community. However, I always keep it into consideration if they intend on communicating with us in the future for any reason. We do not explicitly showcase leaked material in the map, so I do not believe they would take that down in particular. I believe they are aware that this project gathers popularity and interest in the game, since everyone wants to see how the world may look like. This can be one of the reasons why they haven’t done anything, since it’s not too negative. If I were ever in the situation of receiving a cease and desist though, then I would respectfully cease and desist. As we get closer to a precise map, it may be possible to receive that notice in the future."
