Gundam Breaker 4 Reviewed on Steam Deck, Switch, PS5
Back in early 2016 while searching for import-friendly PS Vita games, Gundam Breaker kept appearing as a recurring recommendation. Imagine hack-and-slash combat infused with RPG mechanics, deep customization, and an unabashed celebration of Gunpla culture – that's the essence of this series. When Bandai Namco announced Gundam Breaker 3 with Asia English support for PS4 and Vita, I immediately purchased both versions. It became my gateway into Gundam gaming, leading me to import previous entries and eventually collect nearly every English-localized Gundam title. The recent announcement and simultaneous worldwide release of Gundam Breaker 4 across Steam, Switch, PS4, and PS5 stands as one of 2024's most delightful surprises. After sixty hours with the game, I'm thoroughly impressed despite some minor drawbacks.

Gundam Breaker 4 marks a significant milestone for Western fans. Unlike its predecessor that required importing Asia English copies, this installment offers true localization with English dubbing and multilingual subtitles. But how does the gameplay hold up across different platforms? This comprehensive review will explore everything from combat mechanics to platform comparisons, alongside documenting my inaugural Master Grade Gunpla build journey.

The narrative fluctuates between serviceable and genuinely engaging. Early chapters suffer from excessive dialogue pacing, while later sections deliver surprising character developments and more compelling interactions. Newcomers will find the story accessible, though certain character cameos might confuse those unfamiliar with the series. Bound by embargo restrictions, I can only discuss the opening chapters which present a straightforward narrative structure.
The true magic lies in Gunpla customization - an aspect vastly undersold in pre-release materials. Beyond selecting specific limb components, you can independently adjust ranged weapons per arm, configure dual-wield melee setups, and even modify part proportions. This allows bizarre yet delightful creations like normal-sized units with SD parts strategically incorporated.

Customization extends beyond core components with builder parts that introduce additional functionality and skills. The progression system smartly incorporates part leveling via mission-earned materials and rarity upgrades that preserve useful abilities from outdated pieces. Surprisingly, the balanced difficulty curve eliminates mandatory grinding during the main story.

The visual presentation prioritizes Gunpla models over environments, adopting an aesthetic that scales well across hardware. Combat delivers consistent satisfaction despite the approachable default difficulty. Weapon variety kept experimentation engaging throughout my playthrough, though some boss encounters occasionally highlight weapon-specific weaknesses.

Technically, the game runs exceptionally well on Steam Deck with minimal issues. The PC version distinguishes itself with uncapped framerates and comprehensive input options, while console versions maintain stable performance within their respective limitations. Notable differences emerge in the Switch port's visual downgrades and occasional performance dips.

Minor bugs and one particularly frustrating mission type slightly marred my experience, though neither significantly impacted overall enjoyment. For newcomers apprehensive about gear grinding, be aware this shares DNA with loot-driven franchises like Monster Hunter.

The simultaneous worldwide release coupled with unparalleled customization depth makes Gundam Breaker 4 an essential title for mecha enthusiasts. Though not flawless, its strengths vastly outweigh shortcomings, resulting in one of my favorite gaming experiences this year.
