Hades-Inspired Roguelike Set to Thrill Gamers
Rogue Loops: A Hades-Inspired Roguelike with a Twist
The upcoming indie roguelike, Rogue Loops, draws significant inspiration from Hades, particularly in its art style and core gameplay loop. However, it introduces a unique mechanic that sets it apart from the pack. While a precise release date remains unannounced, Rogue Loops is slated for a PC release in early 2025. A free demo is currently available on Steam, offering players a sneak peek.
The popularity of the roguelike genre continues to surge, with developers constantly innovating on the formula. Games like Returnal exemplify the action-shooter approach, while Hades and its sequel (currently in early access) represent the classic dungeon-crawler style. Rogue Loops clearly falls into the latter category, utilizing a repeating dungeon with randomized loot and ability upgrades within a top-down perspective.
While comparisons to Hades are inevitable given its Steam trailer and demo, Rogue Loops distinguishes itself with its ability upgrade system. Each upgrade includes a distinct downside, significantly impacting gameplay. This mechanic bears resemblance to Hades' Chaos Gates, but in Rogue Loops, these "curses" are more impactful and varied, potentially affecting the entire playthrough.
The narrative centers around a family trapped in a deadly time loop. Players navigate five-floor dungeons, battling unique enemies and bosses. Each run unlocks procedurally generated upgrades, enabling players to craft diverse builds using both beneficial and detrimental buffs and debuffs.
Although an official release date is pending (currently slated for Q1 2025), the Steam page confirms a first-quarter 2025 launch. Until then, a free demo offering access to the first floor is available. Other roguelikes like Dead Cells and Hades 2 provide ample entertainment in the interim.
