In Hyper Light Breaker, players are presented with a diverse range of characters, each known as a Breaker, tasked with the thrilling challenge of battling the Abyss King. Each Breaker brings a unique playstyle to the table, enhancing the game's replayability and strategic depth.

Unlocking new characters in Hyper Light Breaker is a straightforward process, especially when compared to other roguelikes. However, the game itself does not provide clear instructions on how to access new Breakers. This guide aims to fill that gap, offering a comprehensive overview of the characters available in the early access version of the game and the steps required to unlock them. As of the release, only two characters are unlockable, but we will keep this guide updated as more Breakers become available.

How to Get New Characters in Hyper Light Breaker

To unlock new characters, players must collect Abyss Stones, which are rare items dropped exclusively by the Crowns, the game's bosses. Before facing these formidable foes, players need to acquire Prisms, which serve as keys to the boss arenas. Prisms are scattered across the map and can be located by following the golden diamond icon.

After defeating a Crown, return to the Cursed Outpost via the teleporter. Here, you can select the Breaker you wish to unlock and spend your Abyss Stones to make them playable. Although there are nine characters in total, only two are currently unlockable. The method for unlocking the remaining characters is yet to be disclosed.

All Characters in Hyper Light Breaker

Each character in Hyper Light Breaker begins with a SyCom, a crucial item that sets their base stats and core perk, fundamentally shaping their playstyle. These SyComs are the primary factor players should consider when choosing a character. Below is a detailed look at each character and their unique playstyles.

Vermillion

Vermillion is the initial character players encounter, equipped with the Gunslinger SyCom by default. This SyCom provides a balanced stat package that enhances ranged combat capabilities. A critical hit from Vermillion's Rail shot guarantees the next shot will also be a critical hit, making him a formidable opponent from a distance.

For players who prefer a more aggressive, melee-focused approach, Vermillion can unlock the Tank SyCom. This SyCom rewards perfect parries with increased armor and offers superior defensive and melee stats compared to Gunslinger, making it a safer choice for close-quarters combat.

Lapis

Lapis, like Vermillion, starts with a focus on Rail combat, equipped with the Lightweaver SyCom. This SyCom boosts the damage of Rail shots after collecting a Battery (ammo). What sets Lapis apart is her unlockable Warrior SyCom, which enhances her core stats with each upgrade she receives.

Lapis is deadly with either SyCom, but the Warrior SyCom truly unleashes her potential, making her increasingly powerful over time. With enough upgrades, Lapis can surpass other Breakers in terms of raw stats, turning her into a dominant force on the battlefield.

Goro

Goro is tailored for players who excel at long-range combat. His default Astrologer SyCom allows him to charge his Blade skills more quickly while targeting enemies. Alternatively, the unlockable Sniper SyCom directly increases his critical hit rate, making him a high-risk, high-reward choice.

Goro can be categorized as a ranged glass cannon, offering significantly higher damage potential than Vermillion and Lapis. Lacking a defensive SyCom, Goro requires careful play to maximize his effectiveness. However, for those who master his abilities, Goro can be an incredibly potent fighter.
