James Gunn Confirms No CG in Superman's Flying Face
DC Studios co-chief James Gunn has addressed the online debate sparked by a new TV spot for the upcoming Superman movie, specifically focusing on the appearance of David Corenswet's face while flying.
The TV spot, which debuted over the weekend, includes two new clips: one showing Lex Luthor exiting a helicopter in a snowy wilderness, possibly on a quest to find the Fortress of Solitude, and another featuring Superman executing a barrel roll over an icy landscape as he flies toward an unknown destination.
The internet was quick to comment on the visual of Superman's face during the flight sequence. Some viewers felt that his face appeared unnaturally still, particularly when contrasted with his billowing hair and cape, leading to speculation about the use of CGI. Others directly attributed the look to "wonky CGI."However, Gunn took to Threads to clarify the situation in response to a fan's comment praising the TV spot but questioning the CGI of Superman's face. Gunn stated, "There is absolutely zero CG in his face. People’s faces can look different when you put a wide angle lens up close. The background plate in Svalbard is 100% real as is David." Svalbard, the Norwegian archipelago, served as a filming location for parts of the movie.
This clarification confirms that the expression on David Corenswet's face, which some have described as a knowing smirk, was captured naturally, likely aided by a large fan simulating wind during filming.
Despite Gunn's explanation, the debate over the shot continues, with fans drawing comparisons to the flying sequences of Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, another film penned and directed by Gunn. The conversation around this brief clip is part of a broader excitement surrounding the Superman movie, set to premiere on July 11, 2025, as the inaugural film in the DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
For more insights, IGN provides detailed coverage on the new trailer, including all the DC Heroes and Villains featured, James Gunn's comments on Krypto being a less-than-ideal dog in the film, reflections on how Superman embodies hope, and additional content.
