Jenna Ortega on Her Small MCU Role: 'They Cut All My Lines'
Remember seeing Jenna Ortega in Iron Man 3? It's easy to miss, but the now 22-year-old star of Netflix's Wednesday and the upcoming Beetlejuice Beetlejuice movie made her film debut at the tender age of 11 in this 2013 blockbuster. Ortega appears briefly in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as the daughter of Vice President Rodriguez, played by Miguel Ferrer. In a poignant scene set during a Christmas family function, Rodriguez kisses his daughter on the forehead, and the camera pans down to reveal she is in a wheelchair due to a lost limb.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, 12 years after Iron Man 3's release, Ortega humorously reflected on her MCU stint. "I did it once," she said. "It was one of the first jobs I ever did. They took all my lines out. I’m in Iron Man 3 for a quick second. I take up the frame, I have one leg and I’m the vice president’s daughter." Her Death of a Unicorn co-star Paul Rudd, who plays Ant-Man in the MCU, playfully suggested that Marvel might create a bigger role for her in the future, saying, "And so it might very well be that you come back, that they are going to create something for you, ’cause they should be so lucky to have Jenna Ortega in their franchise."
Ortega, however, cast doubt on the possibility, adding, "They even took my name away. I’m really… but I just… I count that, and then I move on." Originally, her role might have been more significant, but it was reduced to a mere subplot by the time Iron Man 3 hit theaters. Fast forward over a decade, and Ortega has become one of the most recognized actors globally.
While Iron Man 3 is often ranked among the weaker entries in the MCU, it was a box office juggernaut, grossing over $1.2 billion worldwide, making it the ninth highest-grossing superhero film ever, surpassing films like Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Captain Marvel. The MCU landscape has evolved significantly since then, with superhero films facing stiffer competition at the box office. If Ortega were to return to the MCU, her star power could certainly help boost ticket sales. The question remains: which character would she be perfect to play?
