The much-anticipated sequel, Mortal Kombat 2, has unveiled the first images of several new characters joining the cinematic universe. Entertainment Weekly has shared exclusive images of Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn, and Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, alongside the returning Hiroyuki Sanada reprising his role as Scorpion.

Fans of the Mortal Kombat series were eager to see how Karl Urban, known for his role as Billy Butcher in The Boys, would embody the flamboyant Hollywood star, Johnny Cage. The released image shows Urban sporting Cage’s iconic hairstyle and sunglasses, striking a classic martial arts pose. In the background, familiar faces from the first film appear, including Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, and Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade.

Entertainment Weekly also featured a statement from Ed Boon, the co-creator of the Mortal Kombat video game series, discussing Johnny Cage's role in the sequel. "His integration into the Mortal Kombat story and universe is a big part of what this movie explores," Boon explained. He highlighted Urban's unique take on the character, describing it as fresh and adding a "novelty factor." Boon teased a "ridiculously hilarious" introduction for Cage, while director Simon McQuoid emphasized the need for a character with depth, which Urban's casting helps achieve without falling into clichéd comic relief.

In addition, Entertainment Weekly confirmed that movie-accurate skins for Urban's Johnny Cage, Rudolph's Kitana, and Ford's Shao Kahn will be available in the video game Mortal Kombat 1 later this year.

The sequel also introduces Damon Herriman as Quan Chi, with Josh Lawson and Max Huang reprising their roles as Kano and Kung Lao, respectively, despite their characters' demise in the first film. Boon explained that the lore of the Mortal Kombat games allows for the return of deceased characters through the use of spirits and the NetherRealm.

Joining the cast are Tati Gabrielle as Jade and Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel. Mortal Kombat 2 is set to hit theaters on October 24, 2025, promising fans an exciting continuation of the iconic franchise.
