Switch 2 Joy-Cons: Mouse Support and More
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) published a Nintendo patent on February 6, 2025, detailing innovative Joy-Con features for the Switch 2, notably mouse-like capabilities. This corroborates speculation sparked by the Switch 2 reveal trailer, which showed the controller being swiped across a surface, hinting at this functionality.
The patent describes a sensor that detects reflected light changes as the Joy-Con moves across a surface, enabling mouse operation. While maintaining the detachable design of the original Switch Joy-Cons, the patent also unveils a new charging dock for simultaneous charging of up to two Joy-Cons and a magnetic attachment with a wrist strap.
Furthermore, the patent introduces a novel controller design: two half-controllers, each equipped with an optical sensor for mouse functionality, which can be combined into a single standard controller using a separate attachment.
