Suikoden is back—sort of. Konami and MYTHRIL have announced Suikoden STAR LEAP, a new mobile RPG for Android and iOS, set for a free-to-play release later this year. While a specific date remains unannounced, fans can expect its arrival sometime in 2024.

For the uninitiated, the Suikoden series, born in 1995, is a collection of RPGs developed and published by Konami, the brainchild of Yoshitaka Murayama. Loosely based on the classic Chinese novel Water Margin, the series (known as Suikoden in Japanese) captivated players with its blend of political intrigue, True Runes, and the legendary 108 Stars of Destiny. Eleven entries, including spin-offs, enriched the franchise until 2012, when the last mainline title was released. Now, instead of a direct sequel or full-fledged revival, Konami offers Suikoden STAR LEAP as a mobile gaming experience.

Suikoden STAR LEAP introduces a fresh cast of characters while staying true to the series' tradition of assembling 108 heroes. The game retains the classic Suikoden feel through its charming pixel art style. Take a look:

The narrative centers on the Rune of Change, one of the 27 True Runes said to have shaped the world. The protagonist, Hou, son of the village chief, celebrates his first successful hunt before disaster strikes—a devastating attack on his village that alters his life forever. He embarks on a journey alongside Hisui (his servant with a mysterious emotional suppression), Shirin (his childhood friend with a strong sense of justice), and Shapur (a former general turned butler) to restore peace.

While the announcement has been met with mixed reactions—longtime fans eagerly anticipating a true sequel may find the gacha-style gameplay of STAR LEAP less than ideal—only time will tell if this new mobile entry will satisfy the series' loyal following.
