Live-Action Street Fighter Movie Finds a New Director

Legendary Entertainment's new Street Fighter movie has found its director: Kitao Sakurai, the creative force behind the comedic masterpiece, The Eric Andre Show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sakurai will helm this latest adaptation, with Capcom deeply involved in the project. The film is slated for release on March 20, 2026.

This isn't the first time Street Fighter has graced the silver screen; the 1994 adaptation, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Ming-Na Wen, and the late Raul Julia, remains a cult classic despite mixed initial critical reception. While casting details are yet to be revealed, fans can anticipate seeing their favorite Street Fighter characters brought to life.

Initially, Danny and Michael Philippou (Talk to Me) were attached to direct, but they left the project last summer. Sakurai's involvement suggests a potential shift towards a more absurdist, comedic tone, aligning with the game's often over-the-top style. This shift has generated excitement amongst fans who appreciate Street Fighter's more cartoonish elements.
