Looney Tunes Shorts Pulled from HBO Max Amid Movie Release

Apr 10,25(10 months ago)

Warner Bros. has made a heart-wrenching decision by removing its entire catalog of original Looney Tunes shorts from HBO Max. These iconic shorts, which ran from 1930 to 1969, represent a "golden age" of animation and have been instrumental in shaping the legacy of Warner Bros. The removal of these culturally significant pieces is part of a broader company strategy to focus on adult and family programming, as children's content reportedly does not attract substantial viewership on the platform.

This move comes despite the profound impact of Looney Tunes on popular culture. For instance, HBO's decision to cancel its deal with Sesame Street at the end of 2024, a show that has been a cornerstone of childhood education since 1969, further underscores the shift away from children's programming. While some newer Looney Tunes spinoffs remain available on HBO Max, the essence of the franchise has been stripped away.

The timing of this decision is particularly odd, coinciding with the theatrical release of "The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Story" on March 14. Originally commissioned by Max, the film was sold to Ketchup Entertainment after the Warner Bros. and Discovery merger. With a limited marketing budget, the movie managed to earn just over $3 million during its opening weekend across more than 2,800 theaters nationwide.

The public's frustration with Warner Bros.' handling of Looney Tunes content is palpable, especially following the controversy surrounding "Coyote Vs. Acme" last year. Warner Bros. Discovery opted not to release the completed film due to distribution costs, a decision that has drawn significant criticism from the artistic community. In February, actor Will Forte labeled the decision as "f—king bulls—t," expressing his outrage and confusion over the choice not to share the film with audiences.

The removal of the Looney Tunes shorts from HBO Max, coupled with the mishandling of recent projects, has left fans and industry insiders alike questioning Warner Bros.' commitment to preserving and promoting its rich animation heritage.
