Marvel Rivals Dev Faces Social Media Pressure, Announces Major Season 3 Changes
NetEase Games is making significant changes to the Marvel Rivals post-launch roadmap to keep the game's momentum strong. They plan to shorten the seasons and introduce at least one new hero every month. This update was hinted at in the new Marvel Rivals Season 2 Dev Vision Vol. 5 video. The video, lasting 15 minutes, revealed that Season 2, launching on April 11, will introduce Emma Frost as a new Vanguard and Ultron mid-season, though his class will be disclosed later. These new characters are set to bring fresh abilities to the game, with even more significant changes slated for Season 3.
Starting with Season 3, which doesn't have a set release date yet, NetEase will reduce season lengths from three months to two. This means major content updates will come faster, but the promise of at least one new hero every half-season will remain intact. After Emma Frost's launch next week, players will wait just a month and a half for Ultron, with subsequent hero releases coming even quicker.
In the Dev Vision video, Marvel Rivals creative director Guangyun Chen discussed the team's commitment to delivering a fun and engaging experience. "Since the launch of Season 1, we’ve been deeply contemplating how Marvel Rivals can continuously deliver fun and engaging experience for you all," Chen said. He acknowledged the pressure from social media discussions and the team's desire to keep the game exciting, as it was at launch in December. Chen emphasized that NetEase aims to fulfill players' fantasies about Marvel Super Heroes by exploring new modes and introducing a diverse roster of characters. After "extensive internal discussions and thorough evaluations," NetEase will adjust its systems to handle the increased content flow, with more details to be shared before Season 3 launches.
"With our goal of keeping the audience’s excitement alive just like our opening months, the real adventure with Marvel Rivals is just beginning," Chen added.
Just hours ago, NetEase pulled back the curtain on Marvel Rivals Season 2, announcing a shift from the vampire takeover theme to a new storyline centered around the Hellfire Gala. This change will bring new outfits, maps, and characters, with more details to be revealed in the coming weeks.
Since its launch in December, Marvel Rivals has been a massive success, attracting 10 million players in just three days. The game, a free-to-play superhero team-based PvP shooter, was released on December 6 across PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S. On Steam, it saw an impressive 480,990 concurrent players at launch, and Season 1 in January peaked at 644,269 concurrent players, making it the 15th most-played game on Valve's platform. However, player numbers have been declining, which might have prompted NetEase's roadmap changes. Despite this, Marvel Rivals remains highly popular and is among Steam's most-played games. The launch of Season 2 and the anticipated Season 3 are expected to boost player engagement further.
