Mass Effect Vets Criticize 'Nightingale's' Openness
Inflexion Games, the studio behind the crafting survival game Nightingale, is planning significant changes based on player feedback and the developers' own assessment. Read on for details on the upcoming update and the studio's vision for the game's future.
Former Mass Effect Developers Address Nightingale's Shortcomings
Summer Update Promises Major Overhaul
In a recent YouTube video, Inflexion Games' Aaryn Flynn and Neil Thomson acknowledged dissatisfaction with Nightingale's current state, citing player numbers and overall reception. A major update slated for the end of summer aims to rectify these issues. While initial post-launch efforts focused on bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements (including the highly requested offline mode), this update will tackle more fundamental design elements.
Nightingale, an open-world survival crafting game set in the Fae Realms, has been criticized for its lack of structure. According to Thomson, the game is "almost too open world," leading to unclear progression and repetitive gameplay. The update will introduce clearer goals, improved progression indicators, and redesigned realms to address this criticism.
The developers aim to enhance the overall player experience by providing a stronger sense of progression and highlighting the unique aspects of each realm. This includes re-evaluating core game mechanics and increasing build limits for more complex structures. Previews of the upcoming content are expected in the coming weeks.
Despite currently holding "Mixed" reviews on Steam, Nightingale is seeing a rise in positive reviews, with approximately 68% of recent reviews being favorable. Flynn and Thomson expressed appreciation for player feedback and emphasized their commitment to improvement. They believe the upcoming update represents a significant step forward, though ultimately the players will be the final judges.
Game8 shares similar concerns regarding the game's lack of guidance and overly complex crafting systems. For a more detailed perspective, check out our Nightingale review (link below).
