Civilization VII VR: A Meta Quest 3 Exclusive

Get ready for a revolutionary experience! Sid Meier’s Civilization VII (Civ VII) will launch exclusively on Meta Quest 3 and 3S. Announced on February 8, 2025, during the Civ World Summit, this marks the franchise's first foray into virtual and mixed reality.

Dennis Shirk, Civ VII Executive Franchise Producer, expressed his excitement on the 2K website: “We're just days away now from the full launch of Civilization VII and look forward to ushering in a new era of strategy excellence for our fans!”

Meta's Director of Games, Chris Pruett, added: “With the recent release of Meta Quest 3S and our strongest games and entertainment portfolio yet, it’s an awesome time for mixed reality. Civilization VII - VR is further evidence of that momentum: it’s a genuine Civ experience made specifically for deep strategy fans.”

Note: While Civ VII is releasing on PlayStation consoles, a PSVR2 version is not currently planned.

Immersive Gameplay: Board Game Meets VR

Civ VII VR transports you to a virtual command table, offering a unique perspective on your empire. Zoom out for a strategic overview or lean in for detailed views of your cities and units—it's like bringing a tabletop game to life!

Enjoy seamless transitions between immersive VR and mixed reality modes, tailoring the experience to your preference. 2K Games describes the experience: “In virtual reality, players are transported to an ornate museum as they look out onto a vista personalized to their leader; in mixed reality, the Command Table adapts to its placement in a player's physical space.”

Engage in single-player campaigns, team up with friends in co-op, or challenge other players in competitive multiplayer modes. Up to four players can join a game using Meta Quest 3 or 3S headsets, facing off against AI or human opponents. See your friends and rivals as their chosen leaders across the Command Table. Online multiplayer requires a 2K and Meta account.

Addressing Player Feedback

Firaxis Games is actively addressing player feedback from Civ VII's early access period. Their official Twitter (X) account announced ongoing efforts to improve the game based on player input. Advanced Access began February 6, 2025, for Deluxe and Founder’s Edition owners.

Following mixed Steam reviews, focusing on UI issues, Firaxis outlined planned improvements. Key priorities include UI enhancements for better intuitiveness and map readability, along with general polish. Community-requested features like multiplayer teams and expanded map types are also under consideration. A quality-of-life update is slated for March, addressing UI adjustments, AI balance, diplomacy, crises, and bug fixes.

Civilization VII VR is expected to launch in Spring 2025 on Meta Quest 3 and 3S. A specific release date is yet to be announced. Meanwhile, Civilization VII is available in early access and launches worldwide February 11, 2025, on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
