MultiVersus to Conclude Operations After Season 5

Warner Bros. Games has announced the impending closure of MultiVersus, its popular platform fighter, following the completion of its fifth and final season. The announcement, made via the official MultiVersus Twitter (X) account on January 31st, 2025, confirmed a shutdown date of May 30th, 2025.

Season 5: A Final Curtain Call

Season 5, launching February 4th, 2025, will be the game's last content update. This season will introduce two highly anticipated characters: Aquaman from DC Comics and Lola Bunny from Looney Tunes. Player First Games and Warner Bros. have confirmed that all Season 5 content, including these new characters, will be unlockable through gameplay. Following the season's conclusion, MultiVersus will be removed from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store. No official reason for the game's closure has been provided.

Offline Play: A Lasting Legacy

While online servers will be deactivated, players will retain access to an offline mode. This local gameplay allows solo play against AI or multiplayer matches with up to three friends. To enable this offline functionality, players must download the latest game version between February 4th (9 AM PST) and May 30th (9 AM PDT). The game will automatically generate a local save file linked to the player's respective account (PlayStation Network, Microsoft Store, Steam, or Epic Games Store), preserving all earned and purchased content.

In-game purchases were halted on January 31st, 2025. Any remaining Gleamium (the premium currency) can be used until Season 5 ends.

A Retrospective: From Beta to Closure

Initially launched in July 2022 as a public beta, MultiVersus quickly gained traction as a free-to-play fighting game. Despite a relaunch in May 2024 with significant improvements (new characters, rollback netcode, PvE mode, etc.), the game faced ongoing challenges, including technical issues, frequent disconnections, and player dissatisfaction with its microtransaction system. Reported player count drops further fueled speculation leading to this decision.

At its closure, MultiVersus will boast a roster of 35 playable characters from various franchises. Player First Games and Warner Bros. expressed gratitude for the community's support throughout the game's lifespan. MultiVersus remains available for download on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC until May 30th, 2025.
