Netflix Debuts 'Thronglets' Game From Black Mirror S7
If you're a Netflix subscriber, you've likely already watched the newest Black Mirror season. Season 7 dropped yesterday with all six episodes, receiving generally positive reviews. While the show itself isn't my focus, Netflix's new tie-in game Black Mirror: Thronglets certainly is.
Black Mirror: Thronglets Is Based on Season 7's Episode 4
The game draws inspiration from the season's fourth episode - a disturbing installment familiar to viewers. For those who haven't seen it yet, here's the premise: The episode toggles between 2034 and 1994, following Cameron Walker (played by Peter Capaldi). What begins as a shoplifting arrest evolves into a psychological exploration of childhood trauma, obsession, and Black Mirror's signature simulation themes.
Black Mirror: Thronglets recreates the retro pixelated virtual pet simulation featured in Plaything, the in-universe game supposedly developed by Colin Ritman (the Tuckersoft developer from Bandersnatch and Nosedive episodes). For mobile platforms, Netflix's Night School studio has adapted this concept.
On the surface, it resembles a glitchy Tamagotchi experience, but quickly ventures into deeper, existential territory. Thronglets aren't mere digital pets - they're evolving digital organisms with autonomous intelligence. You begin with a single pixelated entity, which eventually multiplies into an entire "Throng" that subtly learns from your every interaction.
The Game Is Watching You Too
Beyond basic gameplay, Thronglets analyzes your decisions and behavior patterns, eventually generating a psychological profile based on how you've treated your Throng. Players can compare results with friends for added engagement.
Both the game and its source episode explore themes of memory, digital legacy, and isolation - delivering the emotional intensity and darkness characteristic of Black Mirror. Whether you're a series fan or simply seeking unique gaming experiences, Thronglets is available now on Google Play Store.
