As an officially licensed peripheral, Hori's Piranha Plant camera costs less than Nintendo's $49.99 official camera. It's important to mention that the Switch 2 supports its own official camera accessory as well as other compatible USB-C cameras. Both the Piranha Plant camera and Nintendo's official model are scheduled to launch with the Switch 2 on June 5.

The Piranha Plant camera has some practical design features. The webcam unit itself can be detached from the decorative pot base, allowing you to place it directly on top of the Switch 2 console. This gives it a portability advantage over Nintendo's fixed camera. Additionally, the plant's mouth can be closed to cover and protect the lens.

Nintendo fans were surprised to learn the Piranha Plant camera only has a 480p resolution. "How do you even make a 480p camera in 2025?" asked Reddit user Ramen536Pie. "That must be more challenging than producing a 1080p camera."

A built-in microphone is also featured, which was demonstrated to work reliably across various gaming environments. The C button's unified chat menu is designed as a comprehensive multiplayer tool, potentially marking Nintendo's most significant online service initiative in years.
