Nintendo Switch's Top 10 GBA & DS Games

A Fresh Look at Retro Gaming on the Nintendo Switch: GBA and DS Gems

This time, we're taking a different approach to exploring retro game options on the Nintendo Switch. Unlike some other consoles, the selection of distinct Game Boy Advance (GBA) and Nintendo DS ports on the Switch is surprisingly smaller than one might expect. So, we're combining both systems into a single list, mirroring how they sometimes shared retail shelf space. While the Nintendo Switch Online app boasts many great GBA titles, we're focusing on those available on the Switch eShop. Here are ten of our favorites – four GBA and six Nintendo DS games – presented without any specific ranking. Let's dive in!

Game Boy Advance

Steel Empire (2004) – Part of Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)

Kicking things off with a solid shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the original Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a personal preference for superior gameplay, this GBA iteration is far from disappointing. It's a worthwhile experience, offering a chance to compare versions and providing a more streamlined playthrough in certain aspects. Steel Empire is enjoyable regardless of the platform, proving surprisingly accessible even for those who aren't typically fans of the genre.

Mega Man Zero – Included in Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)

While the Mega Man X series experienced some setbacks on home consoles, its true successor emerged on the GBA: Mega Man Zero. This marks the beginning of an outstanding side-scrolling action series, though its initial entry might not have perfectly polished its presentation. Subsequent games refined the formula, but the first installment remains the ideal starting point. Feel free to continue the journey from there.

Mega Man Battle Network – Included in Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)

Yes, another Mega Man entry. This is justified, however, as Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network offer vastly different gameplay experiences, both excelling in their respective styles. Battle Network is an RPG featuring a unique battle system that cleverly blends action and strategic elements. The core concept of a virtual world existing within electronic devices is ingenious, and the game fully embraces this premise. While later installments saw diminishing returns, the original offers plenty of fun.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Included in Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)

Another collection with multiple worthwhile titles, but Aria of Sorrow clearly stands out. For the right mood, it even surpasses the phenomenal Symphony of the Night. The soul-collecting system encourages grinding, but the engaging gameplay makes it enjoyable. Add an unusual setting and hidden secrets, and you have a true winner. It's a personal favorite among third-party GBA titles.

Nintendo DS

Shantae: Risky's Revenge – Director's Cut ($9.99)

The original Shantae achieved cult status, but limited distribution hindered its reach. The DSiWare release of Shantae: Risky's Revenge allowed the Half-Genie Hero to gain wider recognition, and it certainly capitalized on the opportunity. This game solidified Shantae's position, leading to her continued presence across generations of consoles. Its origins are somewhat unique, stemming from an unreleased GBA title. Interestingly, that game is slated for release soon and could potentially earn a spot on a future list.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Included in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)

To address potential list imbalances, one could consider this a GBA game, as it originated on that platform (though it wasn't initially localized). Regardless, you're likely familiar with Ace Attorney. These enjoyable adventure games combine on-location investigations with dramatic courtroom scenes, featuring humorous elements and compelling narratives. The first game is exceptional, and while personal preferences might favor later installments, it's hard to argue against its status as the best.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)

From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick shares the same high writing quality but introduces a unique gameplay mechanic. As a ghost, you use your abilities to save people while uncovering the truth behind your own demise. This game is a wild ride, highly recommended from start to finish. Its initial release on Nintendo DS was somewhat overlooked, and Capcom's continued support is commendable.

The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)

The World Ends With You is arguably one of the best Nintendo DS games. Ideally, it's the best platform to experience it due to its tight integration with the hardware. However, the Switch version is a solid alternative for those without access to a working Nintendo DS, and it’s an experience worth having.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Included in Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)

The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection compiles all the Nintendo DS Castlevania games. All are worth playing, but Dawn of Sorrow stands out due to the improved button controls replacing the gimmicky touch controls. However, all three Nintendo DS games in this collection are excellent in their own right.

Etrian Odyssey III HD – Included in Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)

This franchise presents challenges for adaptation outside the DS/3DS ecosystem. However, Atlus's efforts have resulted in a playable experience. Each Etrian Odyssey game is self-contained, offering substantial RPG experiences. Etrian Odyssey III, the largest of the three, is a rewarding game despite some rough edges.

That concludes our list. What are your favorite GBA or Nintendo DS games available on the Switch? Share your thoughts in the comments below! We appreciate your feedback. Thanks for reading!
