Orpheus' Fate: BG3 Decision Explored

In Baldur's Gate 3, one of the most crucial decisions players face is near the game's climax: freeing the imprisoned Githyanki Prince Orpheus or leaving him to the Emperor. This choice, made after acquiring the Orphic Hammer, significantly impacts the party's fate.
Updated February 29, 2024: Before deciding Orpheus's fate, players must defeat Ketheric Throm, Lord Enver Gortash, and Orin, requiring thorough exploration of Baldur's Gate. This decision carries immense weight; companions might sacrifice themselves. High rolls (30+) may be needed in certain interactions to influence companion choices.
(Spoilers Ahead!)
Freeing Orpheus or Siding with the Emperor?
This decision hinges on player preferences. Early in Act 3, the Emperor warns that Orpheus's imprisonment prevents party members from becoming Illithids. Freeing him risks this transformation. After the Netherbrain battle (which the Emperor teleports the party to within the Astral Prism to face), the choice is presented: liberate Orpheus or let the Emperor absorb his power.
Siding with the Emperor: This leads to Orpheus's demise as the Emperor absorbs his knowledge. Lae'zel and Karlach may disapprove, impacting their personal quests. While guaranteeing victory over the Netherbrain, this outcome might not please fans of these characters.
Freeing Orpheus: This causes the Emperor to ally with the Netherbrain. A party member might become a Mind Flayer. However, Orpheus joins the fight alongside the Githyanki. He'll even willingly become a Mind Flayer to save his people if asked.
In short: choose the Emperor to avoid becoming a Mind Flayer; free Orpheus to risk it. The former might alienate Lae'zel and send Karlach back to Avernus. The choice depends entirely on player preference.
Moral Considerations:
The "moral" choice depends on individual perspectives, but it boils down to loyalty. Orpheus, a Githyanki heir, opposes Vlaakith's tyranny. Siding with him is natural for Githyanki characters. For others, following Voss and Lae'zel might feel overly demanding, as the Gith prioritize themselves.
The Emperor, a generally benevolent figure, aims to defeat the Netherbrain and aid the party. He accepts that sacrifices might be necessary. Following his plan risks Illithid transformation, but results in a morally upright, albeit tentacled, outcome. Remember, BG3 offers multiple endings; strategic play can lead to a satisfying resolution for everyone.
