Master the Art of Parrying in Avowed: A Comprehensive Guide

Parrying enemy attacks is incredibly satisfying in action games, turning their offensive momentum into an opportunity for devastating counterattacks. This guide details how to unlock and effectively utilize the parry mechanic in Avowed.

Unlocking the Parry Ability:

The parry ability isn't available from the start; it requires unlocking. Navigate to the Abilities menu, select the "Ranger" tab, and locate the Parry ability in the top-middle column. You'll need to allocate an Ability point into one of the three core skill trees before you can unlock it.

Parry has three ranks:

At level 10, the "Arrow Deflection" ability unlocks, allowing you to parry projectiles.

Executing a Parry:

Parrying requires precise timing. Block immediately before an enemy's attack connects. A metallic clang sound and a visual cue will confirm a successful parry, staggering your opponent. Mastering the timing takes practice, but it's less demanding than in titles like Dark Souls or Elden Ring.

Limitations of Parrying:

Not all attacks are parryable. Attacks indicated by a red circle require dodging instead. Furthermore, only melee weapons (one-handed, two-handed, or a shield in your off-hand) can parry. Ranged weapons (guns, wands, bows) and grimoires cannot be used to parry.

Benefits of Parrying:

Parrying stuns attackers, creating openings for significant damage. This defensive technique allows you to mitigate damage while maximizing offensive opportunities. While highly effective for melee builds, it's less crucial for ranged characters. Avowed offers easy respeccing, allowing you to adjust your skillset if needed.
