The PS Portal, Sony's innovative handheld gaming accessory for the PS5, resembles an extended split-pad DualSense controller with an 8-inch 1080p LCD screen nestled in the middle. It transforms your PS5 into a portable gaming powerhouse by streaming games from your console at up to 60fps. The controller boasts all the features of the DualSense, such as haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and a touchscreen interface that takes the place of the traditional touchpad. For those on the go, the Portal can stream your games outside your home, provided you have access to a **very stable, very fast** internet connection. Remember, the PS Portal isn't a standalone device; it's strictly a remote player for the PlayStation 5, so you'll need a PS5 to get started.

In an exciting update, you no longer need a PS5 to enjoy games on the PS Portal. Sony has introduced a feature that allows owners to stream games directly from its PlayStation Now cloud streaming service. This means you can connect the Portal either to your PS5 or directly to Sony's cloud servers, thanks to recent quality of life beta updates launched in April. Opt for the latter, and you'll gain access to a library of over 120 games, including titles like Ghost of Tsushima, Resident Evil 3 Remake, The Last of Us Part 1 Remastered, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Note that you'll need to subscribe to the highest tier of PlayStation Plus, which costs $18 a month, a much more appealing option than spending $500 upfront on a console plus an extra $70 per game.

It's worth mentioning that the PlayStation Portal isn't your only option for streaming PS5 games over Wi-Fi within your home. You can achieve similar functionality by downloading the PS Remote Play app on a mobile device or other gaming handhelds like the Steam Deck. However, this setup is more complex and lacks some of the DualSense's unique features.

PlayStation Portal Review by Seth Macy

"The PlayStation Portal is the most surprising device I've ever come away from loving after initially approaching it with skepticism. It offers a significantly better experience than using your phone with a slap-on controller, and it performs far better than I anticipated. I truly appreciate the freedom it provides to play my PS5 from anywhere with decent WiFi coverage, especially when my family is using the TV to play the Switch. While it's important to remember that it's not a standalone device and absolutely requires a PlayStation 5 to function, the main drawbacks preventing the Portal from being an exceptional device are its lack of access to WiFi networks that require a web browser to log in, and its absence of Bluetooth support for audio. Despite these limitations, it remains a great solution for PlayStation Remote Play. If it weren't for these two puzzling issues, I'd recommend it as a must-own for every PS5 owner who enjoys handheld gaming or competes for the household TV."
